This explains what Climatle collects when you play, why, and what choices you have. If anything here is unclear, email us and we'll explain it directly.
Climatle doesn't require an account to play. Your current streak, your best streak, and your average guessing accuracy are calculated and stored locally in your browser, not on our servers, using a technology called localStorage. That data stays on your device. We never receive it, see it, or store a copy of it ourselves. We don't ask for your name, email, or location to play a puzzle.
Because this data lives only in your browser, it's specific to whatever device and browser you're using. Playing on a different device or browser starts a separate streak, and clearing your browser's site data resets it.
To show you how your score compares to other players, we do send your score for each round and for the full day's puzzle to our server, where it's pooled anonymously with everyone else's scores for that same round or day. We store only a number and a date, never anything that identifies you, and there's no way for us to connect a submitted score back to a particular visitor.
If we add optional accounts later, so streaks and stats can follow you across devices, we'll collect only what's needed for that, and we'll update this policy first.
We use two small localStorage entries of our own: one remembers your cookie preference, the other holds your streak and accuracy stats described above. Neither is a tracking cookie, and neither identifies you personally or is readable by other sites.
We also work with Google AdSense to show ads that keep the daily puzzle free, and with Google Analytics to see which pages get visited and roughly how the game performs. If you accept cookies, both may set their own cookies: AdSense to serve ads based on your visits to this and other sites, and Analytics to distinguish returning visitors from new ones. You can review and adjust your ad settings at Google's Ads Settings, or opt out of personalized advertising from participating companies at aboutads.info.
Third-party vendors, including Google, may use cookies to serve ads based on someone's prior visits to this site or others. This makes ads more relevant, but it also means some browsing activity may be visible to those vendors under their own privacy policies, not ours.
When you first visit, we ask for your consent before setting any non-essential cookies, including the ones used for personalized ads. You can change your choice at any time from the cookie preferences link in the footer.
Climatle isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them.
You can clear your browser's local storage at any time to reset your streak and remove any locally stored preferences. You can also adjust or withdraw ad consent at any time from your cookie settings.
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
